eClarity shares their predictions for the top 10 trending engagement ring designs that’ll dominate 2022.

A brand new year, a brand new start, and a great time to pop the question, grooms-to-be, if you are planning to take the next step in your relationship. But before you get down on one knee, you need the perfect engagement ring for your lady’s finger.

Just like fashion trends, popular engagement ring designs change from year to year, and generation to generation, depending on factors such as current trends, personal preferences and celebrity influence. While certain engagement ring styles such as the classic solitaire will never go out of fashion, there is a shift to more unconventional and non-traditional designs in recent years, which experts in the field predict will continue to trend into 2022.

We turn to Amanda Koo, founder and graduate gemologist of eClarity, one of Singapore’s largest online diamond jewellers with more than 280 designs in store for trying and viewing, to find out what’s trending in wedding jewellery this year. Born and raised in a family of jewellers, Amanda has an impressive 17 years of experience in designing over 20,000 beautiful and heartfelt engagement rings and more, and she gives us an insider look at the top 10 trending engagement ring designs that are set to dominate 2022.

1. PETITE SHANKS

Thinner rings have been rising in popularity in the past year, and eClarity predicts that it’ll continue long into 2022. “We have noticed that more couples are asking for thinner ring shanks in 2022,” Amanda shares. “Our thinnest shanks are usually at 1.7mm, but recently, we have customers requesting shanks that are as thin as 1mm to 1.2mm.”

Perfectly dainty, sweet and romantic, and accentuates the size of the diamond, what’s not to love about thinner ring shanks?

2. CLASSIC SOLITAIRE RINGS

An evergreen style, the classic solitaire ring never goes out of style. Timeless and elegant, this single stone engagement ring stands out in every generation, every year, and every trend.

3. HALO SETTING

Another classic design that withstands the test of time, engagement rings with a halo design are predicted to stay popular in 2022. Not only is it an excellent way to visually enlarge the center stone, it is also a great alternative to jazz up a solitaire gemstone.

The halo setting also adds a touch of vintage vibe to the overall design, which makes it perfect for brides who are looking for a vintage style ring without being too over-the-top.

4. MODERN BEZEL SETTINGS

Rings with a bezel setting are expected to rise in popularity in the year of the Tiger due to its modern and unique look. It is also a hardier design, as compared to daintier prong settings, which makes it perfect for brides who are looking for an engagement ring that is hardy and beautiful at the same time.

5. TRILOGY RINGS

As I like to say, two is better than one, but three is the best! Yet another timeless design that is set to take 2022 by storm, the trilogy ring features a sparkling trio of gemstones that represents the past, present and the future.

Typically, trilogy rings feature a center stone that is larger than the two accompanying stones at the side. For a minimalist or more modern take on this classic design, opt for all three stones to be of the same size, or mix and match the colour and type of gemstones on the ring.

6. SQUARE-SHAPES

Princess or cushion cut rings have always been popular among brides throughout the years. Delicate, romantic and girly, these cuts can be fashioned in a more glamourous style with a halo of diamonds around the center stone, or kept minimalist and demure with little to no stones around it.

7. COLOURED STONES: DIAMOND AND GEMSTONES

Move over, colourless diamonds. Your coloured counterparts are out to play in 2022.

“Colours are trending towards the bold and sweet this year,” Amanda says. As more brides lean towards more unique and unconventional rings, it is no wonder that they are reaching for coloured gemstones more than its traditional colourless counterparts. Whether it is coloured diamonds or gemstones such as sapphires, rubies or emeralds, you can be sure that coloured engagement rings will prevail this year.

8. ELONGATED SHAPES

Elongated shapes like marquise, oval and emerald cut stones are classic designs that are taking centerstage this year. Not only are these cuts timeless and elegant, the elongated shape of the diamond has an enlarging effect on the stone and a lengthening effect on your finger. What’s not to love about that?

For a more refreshing take on these classic shapes, brides have been noted to pair them with off-kilter or an East-West setting for a more contemporary look.

9. CUSTOMISED RINGS

As couples seek to personalise their wedding and strive to imbue meaning into their once-in-a-lifetime celebration, customised engagement rings are on the rise, even in 2022. This option to be involved from the start to end in creating a unique piece of jewellery that is a reflection of their love and story, is exactly what makes ring customisation so popular among modern couples.

“There are no rules, and especially so for 2022, when it comes to customising an engagement ring,” Amanda reveals. “Details such as initials and the heart or infinity symbols with diamonds on the side profile of the ring are popular customisation requests among couples seeking to personalise their rings, and will continue to be popular in the year of the Tiger as well.”

10. GEMSTONE RINGS

Gemstones have been a popular alternative to diamonds over the years, and will continue to rise in popularity in 2022 as brides search for more unique and unconventional engagement rings.

3 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF WHEN CHOOSING AN ENGAGEMENT RING

If you’re having trouble deciding which style you like best or suits your lifestyle because every one of them looks so pretty, ask yourself these questions to help you zoom in on the engagement ring style that suits you the best.

1. HOW WEARABLE DO YOU WANT YOUR RING TO BE?

Are you going to wear your engagement ring daily, or do you plan to wear it on date nights or special occasions only? For everyday wear, you might want to consider a style that is more hardy and can withstand your daily lifestyle. If you’re only going to take your engagement ring out for special days, then feel free to go for more elaborate and glamorous styles.

2. DO YOU WANT YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING TO MATCH YOUR WEDDING BANDS?

If your answer is “yes”, then you might want to share that information with your groom-to-be before he shops for an engagement ring to surprise you. Or, if you are shopping for the ring together, you might want to discuss with your jeweller so that he or she can recommend or create complimentary designs for both your engagement ring and wedding band.

3. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

For a good gauge of what your personal style is, take a look at the type of clothes and accessories you usually sport. Are they modern, vintage, classic, glamorous or minimalist? Since your engagement ring will be a piece of jewellery that will stay with you for the rest of your life, it is best to pick a design that complements your usual personal style, instead of choosing a trendy piece.
