Renting and repurposing jewellery are just some of the ways eClarity’s Amanda Koo is helping to create a circular economy for a more sustainable industry.
After all, the average person is unlikely to buy as many, say, diamond rings as the number of garments one acquires in a year. Precious jewellery is also bought to be worn forever or passed down to future generations, instead of being tossed out with every fashion trend cycle.
Even so, jewellery production does involve practices that also have a huge impact on the environment. For those who want to enjoy fine jewellery with a clear conscience, there are now multiple ways that allow one to do so – and even save you money at that.
CNA Lifestyle talks to homegrown jeweller Amanda Koo to find out more about the sustainable options she’s pushing with her jewellery business, eClarity.
WHY BUY WHEN YOU CAN RENT?
The idea isn’t exactly new – there are a number of fashion rental services here, making an extensive range of outfits and designer bags available to those who need them just for a special occasion or two, or those who simply want to enjoy being able to constantly change their wardrobe without buying more bags and clothes.
But a rental service for fine jewellery? It’s not something we’ve heard of yet in Singapore. Even if it exists, it’s likely on a very limited scale. This is why eClarity’s jewellery rental subscription, The Sample Line, which makes more than 1,000 pieces of jewellery available for selection, piqued our interest.
For S$199 a month, the membership entitles a customer to rent one diamond jewellery piece every month. A gala plan is also available at S$690, with which elaborate pieces worth up to hundreds of thousands of dollars can be rented – the perfect solution for a formal do.
The process seems fuss-free, too: The Sample Line is on an app, where designs can be browsed and selected for doorstep delivery. Anyone who wants to select a piece in person can also visit its gallery. In case you’re wondering, all rented-out pieces are cleaned, disinfected and checked carefully for any damage.

While fashion rental platforms have been quite successful here, we wondered about the reception towards a similar service for fine jewellery, which many are accustomed to thinking of as a more personal possession – something one buys or is gifted, instead of renting to wear.
“People are warming up to the idea, especially the younger customers, who are shifting toward on-demand experiences. There is still a traditional mindset towards the ownership of luxury goods, especially in Asian countries like ours, where bridal and gifting purchases are important, and each piece of jewellery has both emotional and long-term value,” said Koo.
She pointed out the benefits of going the rental route for fine jewellery – besides cost savings, it offers customers a chance to experience the jewellery and understand their personal preferences in terms of style and design better before making a purchase.
“Aside from being a way to ‘test drive’ a piece before purchase, jewellery rental is also one of the easiest ways to work towards a circular economy, especially in our industry, which has seen its fair share of environmental impacts,” she added.
Koo has also observed how younger consumers, particularly, are gradually bypassing the need for the ownership of luxury goods and are preferring easier access to experience them. “Plus, they are also much more environmentally conscious and discerning than consumers before. Rental thus becomes a viable framework, as it not only encourages a shared economy but reduces wastage in the long run,” she said.
“UPCYCLE” HEIRLOOMS AND YOUR OLD JEWELLERY
“Repurposing heirloom jewellery can be a good way to “upcycle” jewellery that one already has on hand and create new ways to cherish meaningful pieces.”
How a piece is repurposed depends on her customer’s wishes. “There are mainly two types of mentalities – because it is sentimental to me, I want to be able to hold it close by wearing the jewellery every day, or because it is sentimental to me, I want to conserve the original look of the piece,” she shared.
Repurposing can involve fixing, resetting, re-conditioning or re-colouring, which still retains the integrity of the original piece. “We may retain parts of the jewellery but reconstruct other parts that have experienced wear and tear. Often, customers are open to redesigning it, so that they get to wear the treasured piece every day or add a personal touch to it,” Koo said.
Don’t forget that repurposing can be done on pieces other than heirlooms – like jewellery that you might have bought or been gifted previously and no longer fit your style. It also offers a way to creatively bring together gems from several jewellery pieces into a single new piece.
Koo recalled a particularly sentimental project she had worked on. “A customer came to me with a collection of her late husband’s diamond gifts, which were originally mounted into rings, pendants, and earrings. Though in odd sizes with varied colours and shapes – some in a broken condition – all the pieces were still very precious to her,” she said.
“We decided to unmount the diamonds and use them to craft an eternity bracelet. The re-designed piece featured 11 gorgeously arranged diamonds, starting from the first small diamond he got for her when they were in school, to the heirloom piece from her mother-in-law, to the final piece, which was a memorial diamond made with her husband’s ashes. When she collected the eternity bracelet, she was in tears.”
CONSIDER A LAB-GROWN DIAMOND
It’s no secret that lab-grown diamonds are currently a big business and steadily gaining popularity, especially with younger consumers who actively try to be more environmentally conscious with their purchase decisions. According to Koo, mining natural diamonds has adverse effects on the environment, such as deforestation, soil erosion and groundwater contamination, just to name a few.
“But besides becoming more sensitive to environmentalism and the origin of diamond sources, Singaporeans are also practical spenders. I think the cost savings that come from lab-grown diamonds is undeniably one of the push factors for its growing popularity,” commented Koo.
At present, half of Koo’s business comes from lab-grown diamonds, a sign that there is a good level of interest and confidence on the part of consumers in them.
“In terms of quality, lab-grown diamonds definitely measure up against natural diamonds. They are optically and chemically the same as natural diamonds… in fact, every lab-grown diamond from us has a recognised certification from GIA and IGI, just like natural diamonds. That being said, you can be more adventurous with lab-grown diamonds as well, as they now come in various shapes and colours, so it’s not just a matter of carat sizes,” she further explained.
Add to that the fact that they can go for as low as half the price of natural mined diamonds, and there’s honestly not much else that needs to be said to convince customers to consider them as a more sustainable option – for both the environment and their wallets.

Me and My Money: Gems are just part of her sparkling portfolio
SINGAPORE – As the hit song goes, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but they can also be valuable items for investors looking to grow their wealth, says entrepreneur Amanda Koo. Ms Koo certainly knows an investment gem when she sees one: Her interest – passion might be a more accurate term – lies in jewellery which in turn has a big influence on where she puts her money. She has a personal jewellery collection that sits alongside her own gems business, a sign of her belief that there is an intangible personal and sentimental value in collecting objects like diamonds, rather than just accumulating cold hard cash.
That meant she could stay ahead of the curve by exploring the customisation process for engagement and wedding bands, as well as maintaining a real-time database of diamond availability. People also invest in jewellery because of the personal connection. Ms Koo says she had a customer who brought in an heirloom from her grandmother – a two-carat diamond valued at $9,000 around six decades ago. A similar piece now would cost $70,000.
“Beyond the tangible return of the diamond, what is precious is also the intangible value, including the beauty and sophistication that her grandmother brought with her with the jewellery she wore in her lifetime, which was later passed on to her daughter, and then to her granddaughter,” Ms Koo notes.
Tangible assets like diamonds also make good investments over a long period, similar to other alternative investible products like whiskey and wine. But people wanting shorter-term gains can focus on rare gems or those that are in trend, says Ms Koo, who was born in Malaysia, where her father is chairman of chain jeweller Wah Chan. She came to Singapore as a teenager and later graduated with a degree in computer science from the National University of Singapore. Ms Koo also has a master’s in counselling from Monash University in Australia and is a graduate gemologist and accredited jewellery professional with qualifications from New York. The single mother has three sons aged 12, 15 and 17.
Q: What’s in your portfolio?
A: My main investments include rare jewellery pieces for my business, property, managed portfolios, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and stocks and start-ups. I also have investments in cryptocurrency and insurance. About 20 per cent of my investment goes to managed portfolios, another 20 per cent to the ETFs and stocks and 20 per cent to start-ups. I also do day trading, which I allocate another 20 per cent to. About 10 per cent of my portfolio is in cryptocurrency, insurance and others, while the last 10 per cent is left available for me to decide what to invest in. I also have my own diamond collection that is separate from the business. One of my top five favourites in my personal collection is a diamond necklace with a central one-carat heart-shaped diamond, 22 princess-cut diamonds, 22 baguette diamonds and 112 round brilliant diamonds in 18K gold, white, with a total worth of $200,000. I also have a collection of Akoya pearl necklaces, Akoya pearl earrings, as well as a full set of blue sapphire jewellery and a diamond eternity bangle.
Q: How did you get interested in investing?
A: Even after I was 10 years into the business, I was never big on investments. My business funds were put into basic corporate accounts that yielded negligible interest rates. But this disposition I had towards investments changed after two separate encounters with my friends five years ago. I had a friend who owns a big regional conglomerate. He said his business was actually making a loss from the second generation onwards, and it was actually the earnings from his side investments that helped cushion the dip in revenue for his business, and now the business is well in its fourth generation. This inspired me to start planning ahead for my business and invest for rainy days. Another one of my friends, who is a business owner of my age and also came from a humble background, bought a bungalow worth $9.8 million. We chatted about his investments and he said he has always been an active investor and sees a monthly investment return of $30,000 from his range of investments. Witnessing the importance of investments, I spent two years reading more than 50 books, meeting up with bankers from different banks and joining an exclusive investment forum. With this exposure, I have now built a rather diversified portfolio that generates healthy dividends.
Q: Describe your investing strategy.
A: My strategy is simple: Buy in big names or US indexes during market crashes. I am dividend-focused and am well diversified in my portfolio, investing my funds into different countries and market segments. Keep some extra cash for fun trading and have an exit strategy as well as some extra cash for when the price drops further. I trade and invest with a computer scientist mindset, which puts emotions aside, and with minimal fundamental assessments of individual stocks.
Q: What else is in your financial plan?
A: I bought education insurance for my three sons, who have token sums for their respective education funds at the age of 18.
Q: How are you planning for retirement?
A: I love living a simple life. With a resort home in Malaysia, I could probably step into my first phase of active retirement now, if it weren’t for the fact that I still love making a difference in and through my businesses. Currently I have close to $1 million invested, with about 8 per cent returns. It is a humble start. I will continue to figure out my business and life direction as I mature past 45 years old.
Q: What does money mean to you?
A: I see money as a means to bring happiness. A means to have what you want, to do what you like, for as long as you prefer. But it’s important to keep our wants as simple as possible.

A: A 1,850 sq ft freehold condominium with four bedrooms in Novena.

Best and worst bets
Q: What has been your biggest investing mistake?
A: I once entrusted someone with $100,000 to trade on my behalf using investment algorithms and that fell through. I also invested $100,000 into a start-up, believing in the team’s potential and business model, but the business did not take off due to a lack of adaptability and willingness to tweak the business model when needed. These experiences taught me to be fully responsible and informed in my investments. Investing is about skills and knowledge, it is not a gamble, and it doesn’t have a quick fix. So it is best that one does not go into investments unless they are fully aware of their actions, risks and plans.
Q: And your best investment?
A: eClarity was an investment in and of itself due to the higher capital amount required. Within that, my lab-grown business, BA.SG, has seen 500 per cent year-on-year growth since its start in 2019. A resort home that I bought in Malaysia 15 years ago was also one of my greatest investments in terms of its intangible returns, as it provided an avenue for family bonding, and a quick getaway to nature, with activities like horseback riding and a fruit farm.
Granddaughter of jewellery chain founder uses S$80,000 to start own diamond brand
SINGAPORE — She was born with a gold spoon in her mouth, but Amanda Koo decided to forge her own path
in the diamond industry. Instead of joining the prominent Wah Chan jewellery chain in Malaysia — her
grandfather’s legacy which began as a goldsmith —Koo, founded bespoke jewellery brand eClarity with her own savings in the mid-2000s, renting a unit in Shaw Centre to sell her products. There, she toiled, young sons in hand, until she moved to her current premises at Ngee Ann City close to a decade later.
Speaking to Yahoo Finance Singapore from her shop, Koo, 44, said that she grew up in her grandfather’s store passing her time counting gemstones and speaking with the staff. Things changed after she was kidnapped in Malaysia. Koo moved to Singapore alone at the age of 13 for her safety and grew independent.
She attained a computer science degree from the National University of Singapore and worked in a bank and a telco before she returned to her true love – diamonds. Koo flew to New York to study gemology in the Gemological Institute of America. She paved her own way financially by selling Manuka honey and nail stickers door-to-door in New York, coupled with selling jewellery on eBay.
Using S$80,000 in savings accumulated from her years in corporate and her side hustles, Koo founded eClarity in 2005. She used to S$60,000 renovate the Shaw Centre space, some S$10,000 into procuring jewellery samples, and close to S$20,000 in rental deposits.
From pulling in a revenue of S$50,000 in the first year, eClarity now makes an annual seven-figure revenue, raking in between S$250,000 and S$600,000 in average monthly sales.
Microwave vs slow cooker model
Even though Wah Chan paved a way into the jewellery industry, Koo was adamant about setting out on her own, refusing aid from her father, who had helped expand Wah Chan to more than 30 stores throughout Malaysia.
“The suggestion from my father, if I were to think back in year 2005, was why don’t I make use of his resources… money, connection with the banks, why don’t you open 20 outlets, why don’t you work with the bank we are very close with.”
Of course, she did not heed his suggestion.
“I remember replying to him and saying… ‘you are a microwave and I am a slow cooker’.” She elaborated that the microwave method meant to open chain stores at a fast pace to reap in profits. But this would mean mass-produced jewellery that had no distinguishing features.
But Koo did not want to be a cookie-cutter jeweller. She wanted to customise designs for her customers.
“Why is your wedding band the same as hers when you marry someone else? But that was actually the trend in Singapore back then because you just walk into a chain store (and) you grab whatever that is from the counter. You go back to the office, half the office is wearing the same wedding band,” she quipped.
Customised jewellery, she said, were the ones that her patrons appreciated the most.
“These are things that really warm people’s heart right and these are slow cooker meals. They are not microwave. In a microwave you cannot cook something like that,” she said.
Koo said using her father’s money was not an option as she wanted to run her “own show”. The family was fully supportive of Koo’s choice.
Initially, Koo wanted to pay tribute to her grandparents and named her business after theirs. However she found that the Wah Chan did not resonate with the younger generation, and moreover, diamond suppliers were confused by the similar names, often sending parcels to the wrong store.
So Koo named her business eClarity, after the most elusive of the four Cs (cut, colour, carat and clarity), with the “e” standing for empowerment, and a nod to the online aspect of the business.
Building a database
Apart from wedding band customisation, consultations with specialists and jewellery subscription rentals, Koo tapped on her computer science education, developing a real-time diamond database with over 20,000 diamonds from the Gemological Institute of America — a relatively radical idea when mooted in the mid-2000s.
The database was meant to draw customers who were not your typical tai tai (rich housewives) who frequented jewellery stores, but the computer science “geeks” after Koo’s own heart. These “geeks” did not necessarily want to step into chain stores.
“They really want to have a very clear comparison online available. It’s like buying a handphone, right? You shortlist this model, that model, …and then you want to put together and compare the specs… So I wanted that to be to be available for diamonds as well.”
However in the initial phase of building the database, an overwhelming majority of customers would still rather see the diamonds in person.
“Back then when I launched the online database, it was a bit beyond its time. The customers were less ready than my system was. So it served as a good catalogue for a lot of people because you don’t see that kind of catalogue from other jewellery stores,” she recounted.
However as technology evolved, more people turned to the database. It also proved to be good foresight on Koo’s part when the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced businesses online. Now 40 per cent of eClarity’s sales are online.
Koo is looking to continue her foray into technology, exploring the possibility of artificial intelligence grading and non-fungible tokens in the jewellery line.

Amanda Koo was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug at a very young age. Her earliest memory of doing sales as a child was peddling upcycled Monopoly cards and bedazzled cardboard paper to her schoolmates. As she grew older, she would sell everything from handmade crafts to clothes, nail polish, manuka honey and even Nokia phone covers (back when they were all the rage) at flea markets, all while pursuing her studies. Growing up in a family of gold jewellers from Malaysia, the idea of joining the business seemed the most obvious for Koo. Instead, she chose a different path and joined the corporate sector handling product development for Citibank and M1. “I loved my work in technology and it was great that we were creating things that would impact a greater audience,” says the NUS Computer Science major.
It was only when she got married that her priorities started to switch from app development to family planning. “I wanted a job which would allow me to be present for my children and provide them with a comfortable life. Jewellery has always had a special place in my heart so starting a business that I was confident in felt like the right way to go,” she adds. Rather than simply join the family jewellery empire, Koo wanted to strike it out on her own. She enrolled with the Gemological Institute of America to get proper certification and acquire relevant experience.
During her time in New York, she sold loose pieces of jewellery on eBay, and found this mode of transaction very lucrative. Using the $80,000 she saved from her previous IT jobs, Koo launched eClarity in 2005 as an online business offering custom-made wedding bands.
“When I first started, there weren’t any mainstream customisations of wedding bands and engagement rings. Everyone was wearing the same designs and customisation was understood as copying designs from magazines. Moreover, the prices of diamonds were high, and there was only one US platform that sold diamonds online. That’s when I realised that there was a gap in the market and that my purpose was to fill it by revolutionising the jewellery market with my knowledge and expertise,” she explains.
Navigating challenges
But jumping into an e-commerce business — at a time when bricks-and-mortar stores was still the preferred mode of shopping — was equally challenging for Koo. Very often, she would find herself showcasing her diamonds in-person — at fast food chain McDonald’s outlet at Shaw Centre with kids in tow, no less. To her chagrin, the most common question she would get is “Is this real?”
She says: “Singaporeans were sceptical about buying diamonds online. Even though the prices offered were very attractive, customers would still ask to see the diamonds before confirming the purchase. That was a big problem, because to save costs, the diamonds were purchased upon order, and I didn’t have any on hand. Plus, I didn’t have a physical shop front either.”
Eventually, Koo saved up enough to set up her first shop at Shaw Centre, where couples could try on wedding bands and receive professional guidance on selecting their diamonds. “I loved the idea of offering bespoke wedding jewellery for couples so we made sure our products were highly personalised,” she adds.
As a first-time business owner, Koo also learnt how to navigate challenges when it came to manpower allocation and profit-making. “We placed high importance on customer service and were very selective with the hiring of master-craftsmen and staff members. But this also meant higher expenses and limited profits, which was something I had to learn to balance between quality and cost. We were also extraordinarily busy, and our staff members were overworked, which taught me how to pace my business growth better as well.”
“In the luxury fashion and jewellery industry, market trends are continuously evolving, and it is difficult to consistently keep up with what is relevant. Being in tune to the team’s needs is also crucial for start-ups. It can be a steep learning curve to detect nuances, delegate tasks effectively, while being inspiring, rewarding and positive as a leader, at the same time facing the stressors of managing finances and competition,” she continues. “But I think what makes starting a business exciting and rewarding is that you are continuously learning more about yourself, the business and the people around you.”
Her proudest achievement, she adds, was the time she was able to give her staff 3.88 months of bonus. But 17 years on, the mother of three has clearly found her groove with a 500% year-on-year growth for the company, a stunning flagship boutique in Ngee Ann City, and multiple awards such as Promising SME 500 Award, Young Entrepreneur Award, Spirit of Enterprise Award, and Singapore Quality Brands Award. Koo has also served on the board of the Entrepreneur Organisation (EO) for three consecutive years as the finance chair. “I hope for myself to become the Elon Musk of diamonds one day,” she quips.
Future plans
Presently, eClarity has a real-time diamond database featuring over 20,000 GIA-certified natural diamonds and IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds, and has crafted more than 5,000 pieces of customised jewellery.
Other services include anniversary gift customisation, heirloom repurposing, and tailored engravings. eClarity also subscribes to a global Best Price Challenge that aims to match the price of diamonds customers can find worldwide to ensure the best value and prices guaranteed. More recently, Koo launched two new sub-brands: BA.sg (which offers a large online inventory of lab-grown diamonds) and The Sample Line, offering monthly and yearly jewellery rentals as well as luxury bag rental subscriptions. Eventually, she intends to expand these sustainable offerings to the Malaysian market.
“With a growing concern for sustainability, choosing greener, more transparent supply sources has become commonplace, and more value for money options like lab-grown diamonds have increased in popularity. There is also a growing interest in fancy shaped diamonds and coloured gems,” says Koo of changing consumer trends. As for other possible trends, she adds: “Looking to the future, I believe sustainability will still be a buzzword in the industry, with more consumers and industry players looking towards a circular economy, where they rent instead of buy jewellery pieces to suit their lifestyles and reduce excess capacity. Technology will also help fuel the future of the fine jewellery industry with the rise of AI diamond grading and online diamond certifications.” When asked how she will be celebrating National Day, Koo candidly reveals that she will be performing with a group of entrepreneurs at an EO party. She will also be collaborating with her good friend from homegrown dessert makers Bob the Baker Boy to hide 57 red gemstones in various baked goods to gift Singaporeans during the whole month of August.
