eClarity Debunking the Myth: Natural Diamonds and What are the Commonly Asked Questions

Can you tell difference between labgrown and natural diamond?

Natural diamonds are grown 90-120km beneath the earth, with high pressure and high temperature, presence of carbon, diamonds are formed. Whereas on the other hand, labgrown diamonds are formed in a lab with a very similar environment with high temperature and high pressure.

They have the same physical and chemical properties, same scale in Mohs Scale of Hardness, same visual properties. It is almost impossible for a layman without any gemological knowledge to look at the two and be able to tell the difference.

For someone who has advanced gemological knowledge to tell the difference, is to look through the microscope and understand the visual difference between an earthy mineral, and a below the earth minerals, the microscopic inclusions. The specific knowledge is even beyond a normal gemologist, this goes to show how difficult it is to differentiate natural and labgrown diamond. Having said that, it is written clearly on the diamond reports by GIA and IGI the two most reputable laboratory that issues report for natural diamond and labgrown diamonds, whether it is natural, or labgrown.

eClarity would like to present an analogy, let’s say if natural diamonds are a baby, then labgrown diamonds are an IVF Baby.

Are natural diamonds more expensive than labgrown diamonds?

Naturally, natural diamonds are more expensive than labgrown diamonds.

For example, a natural 1-carat G colour, VS2, 3EX diamonds with certification by GIA or IGI, will be $10,000. For labgrown diamonds, with the same specifications will be sold around $3,000- $5,000. The reason for the range for the labgrown diamonds’ price is because it is also changing, it is stabilising between $3,000 to $5,000 depending on the demand, and the supply.

Can diamond be resold?

Previously, the only way to resell a diamond is through a pawnshop, or you sell it to someone you know.

Times has changed, now people can resell their diamonds on second-hand selling platforms. platforms, like Carousell to sell it.

eClarity provides for customers, who like to sell their diamonds to upgrade for another one a trade up at eClarity and BA.sg.

For diamonds that is bought with no trade up policy, you could try and go to the second-hand selling platforms. Pricing wise, you will be surprised as you could fetch quite close to your buying price sometimes.

What is the resale value of natural diamonds?

At eClarity, if you have bought a natural diamond that is triple excellent, within 3 years, you could come back to eClarity for a trade up. The value that you get from the diamond you bought is almost 100%.

Do natural diamonds increase in value?

As a gemologist of 17 years, Amanda at eClarity has observed that the April’s birthstone prices were rather consistent. While sometimes you see a little up trend, but at the same time it could be affected by other factor, for example like your currency exchange, versus your country’s currency.

For certain diamonds, very special unique features diamonds, it has seen increased multiple times, example, black diamond, it was $200 from 17 years ago, but today if you want to buy a black diamond in the excellent range, you will have to spend thousands. The key thing is to know what are the diamonds that are potentially rare and getting its popularity.

In today’s situation, for labgrown diamonds, like pink diamonds, it could have some potential, we are just seeing an uptrend in terms of interest, also, there is a challenge growing pink diamond to a desirable colour, so this is something you would prefer to enquire and observe.

Do natural diamonds lose value?

On the other hand, eClarity gemologist Amanda has never really seen diamonds that lose its value, for example, a customer had brought in his grandmother’s diamond, with the receipt, say this is a diamond that is bought from a shop, that was 2 carats, and it was for $9000, and now 2 carats today are for $30,000-50,000.

Why is diamond resale value so low?

The resell value sometimes depends on where are you selling it. Usually when you sell it at pawn shop, that’s probably not the right place to sell your diamonds.

There are better platforms these days, you could try to sell it on Carousell, or you can bring it back to where you bought your diamonds for trade up, some you can get up to 70-80%

Is it better to buy gold or diamonds?

When you’re buying flowers, you don’t think about whether the price of the flowers will increase in value. You buy flowers because you want to look at the person smile. Diamonds are the same, you buy it to make someone happy, the good thing is that diamond is forever, as compared to flowers. So, you can continue to accessorise yourself, and you continue to express your love.

When you buy gold, the main concern is about the value, say you buy 10 grams of golf, and you will sell when the prices are high.

So, one is for pure investment purpose, and the other expression of love.

How diamonds look when they are found?

Diamond in the rough look like a piece of frosted rock or glass! Diamonds originally are of this pointy shape (diamond shape), and they don’t look like diamond at all!

How much is a 1 carat uncut diamond?

If an uncut diamond is 1 carat, depending on the yield, it may be a 0.3 carat or a 0.1 carat after cutting. It depends on the position and colour of the inclusion.

Do uncut diamonds have resale value?

Uncut diamonds are not something that a layman could purchase easily on the market. It is rather tricky as the diamond trader would prefer to keep it conflict free. It is almost impossible for a jewellery store to treat uncut diamonds. When treating uncut diamonds, the owner has to have to proof that it is a conflict free diamond that is sourced within the Kimberley Process.

Is it worth getting a GIA diamond certified?

Now most of the time, eClarity suggest it’s always worth it to get a diamond GIA certified unless the diamond is very small or of bad quality. The price to get it certified range from a few hundred from slightly below a hundred to hundred plus USD.

Also, we need to remember that we need to have the insurance and shipment to send to GIA and sending it back. But only with GIA certification, you can then emotionally be assured that you know the grading or the quality of your diamond.

If you are thinking about selling and reselling it, it also gives you the assurance of prices, the confidence to fetch a certain price.

Let’s say if you want to do some setting or resetting, GIA also laser inscribe on the diamonds.

Which certification is best for diamond?

eClarity and BA.sg we use GIA and IGI more, so you may want to consider the labs that we have mentioned.

Which is better? GIA or AGS?

GIA is known to be more academic than AGS, while AGS is more focus on to the cut analysis, and commercially well received.

They are closely related to each other in terms of the founders.

Is there fake GIA certificate?

We haven’t seen it for ourselves for a fake GIA. But we have seen fake certification.

There are a few tell-tale signs like wrong spelling, wrong alignments. It is recommended that the certification is from renown labs like what we mentioned above. If you’re getting a GIA certification, there’s always a bar for you to scan and double verify.

Be very cautious if you are getting anything else.

Yasmin: Nice talking with you again! So, quality and value of labgrown diamonds matches the real thing?

Amanda: Before we go into the definition of value and how it correlates to expression of love, the price of labgrown diamond is about one-third to half of that of natural diamond. In terms of quality, labgrown diamonds and natural diamonds have the same chemical and physical properties, and optical property.

Yasmin: I see, and hence their popularity driven of course by the younger generation, who are very concerned about the environment.

Amanda: Exactly! So, the people all from the younger generation, say the young couple who are coming in for their engagement ring, and they are in their 20s, so we have girls and guys coming in and say they have no problems with the budget, they have high budget but they eco-concerned, so they choose labgrown diamonds instead of natural diamonds for their engagement ring. Now beyond that, there is also another favourite topic, favourite concern from this younger generation, which is the fact that labgrown diamonds have more transparent supply chain, and so they can then ensure that these are not conflict diamonds, which is a concern that we had during our times, if you remember the movie “Blood Diamonds” and how the children were exploited to mine diamonds, so the process has become something that the younger generation who choose labgrown diamonds don’t have to worry about.

Yasmin: Ok, but why do people’s journey remain snooty when it comes to labgrown diamonds? We sniff at them.

Amanda: I think the first most popular misconception is people come in and they use the word “fake” to describe labgrown diamonds. So, I always use the term “synthetic diamonds” “simulant diamonds”, I teach my couples and my customers the differences. Now when we talk about synthetic diamonds, labgrown diamonds they are real diamonds, they are grown in a lab with high temperature high pressure which is similar to those that are grown under the world. And the properties are the same, so those are synthetic diamonds.

When we talk about fake diamonds, we are talking about simulant diamonds, which are like CZ (Cubic Zirconia), the GGG, the moissanite, the glass or plastics. So, these are fake diamonds. So this is one misconception that we can clarify, people tend to think that since you’re growing the labgrown diamonds, can you then control the quality? Can we all get flawless, D color, triple excellence diamonds very easily? The answer is No. The growth environment while is in a lab, but it is not  within human control because we have all the microscopic minerals in the world, and when we grow the diamonds these minerals will be entrapped inside the diamonds and these becomes our inclusions, which affect the clarity grading.

Yasmin: So, this tells you if the crowds are getting younger and younger, and a lot more educated, about the environment, not just about well read in general, just for themselves, then labgrown diamonds will have a great future here in Singapore?

Amanda: It’s an unknown, but looking at the trend for this year, it has been growing ever since, and I started noticing very closely that 2019, that it has been growing all the time.

Yasmin: Are there any disadvantages of labgrown diamonds Amanda?

Amanda: One thing I could think of is, currently GIA report, the biggest grading lab, they are not issuing physical report for labgrown diamonds, only digital report, so people are not very used to that, that’s first. Second, you know all the misconception that we have, that could be a disadvantage for labgrown diamonds as well, thirdly of course the value is still unknown, so these are the few things that are the disadvantages for labgrown diamonds.

Yasmin: Fantastic! Well Thank you for giving us some education on this at least, we have a deeper study at CNA Lifestyle.asia read the article there guys. Thanks Amanda!

Amanda: Thank you Yasmin

Yasmin: Founder of eClarity, they are a jeweller in Singapore.

A Girl’s Best Friend: How eClarity Started From Scratch to Shining Bright – Interview with Singapore Business Review

Sass: You’re watching Singapore Business Review. Joining us today is Amanda Koo, founder of eClarity, one of Singapore’s Largest Online Diamond Jewellers. Welcome Amanda.

Amanda: Hi Sass, very good morning to you, and thank you for the introduction. Yes, my name is Amanda, and I’m happy to be here.

Sass: So Amanda, tell us about eClarity, what pain points are you trying to address in the industry?

Amanda: Yeah, so I founded eClarity, bespoke diamond specialist about 17 years ago. And I remember till today the mission is still the same. I want Singaporean to be wearing something different. Jewellery sometimes can get a little boring in Singapore, people just buy bigger and bigger diamond. You get a 1 carat, I get a 1.5 carat, and someone else want a 2 carat. So, beyond the size, we’re looking into surprising Singaporeans with not just the size, but we go into bespoke design. So, the design that you wear, you will find no one else wearing the same design. We are also looking at pink diamonds, black diamonds, yellow diamonds. We are also looking at different shapes, fancy shapes, not all diamonds are round, so it can be marquise, can be cushion, can be square. So, from different aspects, right? We just want to surprise Singaporeans with the options, possibilities, and capacity that diamonds can bring to them.

Sass: Now what gave you the idea of creating a rental subscription business model for jewellery?

Amanda: Thank you for asking that, Sass. It is awesome and the whole team is so happy and hopeful that this new rental subscription model that we have launched, which is called The Sample Line. The Sample Line is now available to be downloaded on Google Play, or App Store. You see, traditionally, for rental, typically you rent that one piece, or the two pieces, for your wedding, your biggest birthday party and it’s typically expensive. So, what we want to do, it just dawned upon me, from two angles. Like people rent bags, people rent clothes, but what about renting jewellery? You know, I have the excess capacity, being a designer’s house, eClarity, for the past 17 years, we have more than a thousand pieces of master sample line, which is that one piece that we design, we don’t sell them typically, we keep them in our database, just so that we have the masterpiece. So, in order to not waste excess capacity, we have decided to share this with the entire Singapore. You see, the thing is, how many pieces of earrings can someone own? For example, let’s say if you spend $5,000 on a pair of earrings, on a yearly basis, you only get that one. But now, our mission, The Sample Line, is going to allow Singaporean, say you pay $690 for a yearly subscription, you get $10,000 worth of jewellery multiply by 12, because you can rent a piece of jewellery every month and the whole wardrobe of eClarity is yours. So, we’re sharing that availability to Singaporeans. And this is to support sustainability, to support sharing economy, to reduce excess capacity. So, I think in the end Singaporeans get to be more fashionable, more statement pieces on their faces, and I hope Singaporeans become happier with this service that is available to them.

Sass: Speaking of databases, as the owner of Singapore’s first Realtime diamond database, can you describe the process in implementing this?

Amanda: So, the story has to start 17 years ago, so I was a graduate from NUS, in Computer Science, so I’m a very geeky person. I also have a gemological graduate diploma from GIA. So, my plan was to integrate this two knowledge: embracing technology and also gemology into one. And the best thing to do is to provide a realtime diamond database, to Singaporeans, and actually to the world. Now as one company, there’s a limit of how many diamonds I can have but if I consolidate the diamonds from all over the world, and I have the technical capacity to make it real-time, so example if I collaborate with someone, a big supplier from Hong Kong, another one from Israel, another one from New York, and me in Singapore, and we put all our diamonds on one database, and if I sell 5 pieces, 10 pieces today, I take it off from the system immediately and it get updated from the system. Now the whole world gets to have multiplied of option. So, what I did, it was firstly of course to get a trustworthy technical team, to build the FTP, to build the API, so that all these can be seamlessly integrated. Of course, the source of the diamond becomes important because we only work with site holders, so people who are recognised in the industry, with many years, generations of experience in the industry. And then we have to make sure that everyone has that responsibility to tick off a diamond whenever a diamond is sold, so that there’s no disappointment to their end user. So, we put all these together, the technical part, the human part, and then the UI part, and then we published to eClarity.com.sg. Now in fact, in recent three years, in November 2019, eClarity has spinoff a new labgrown brand, which is called BA.sg, offers more than 5000 pieces of labgrown diamonds, we are doing it the same manner, it is very well received. All labgrown diamonds are IGI Certified, and it’s also real-time.

Sass: So now that most industries are actually pushing more towards a more digital environment, how do you see the jewellery industry continuing it digital journey? What would it be like in the future?

Amanda: I think digitalisation is such a popular word these days, right? I think when we talked about digital journey, we talked about the sales platform, the marketing platform, and beyond that is also and education platform. So you want to sell something digitally, you want to things like what I said, like real-time diamond database. Beyond that, a marketing platform, where you do your videos, you do all your social media, you market yourself well on your TikTok, your Youtube, whatever new platform that you have. And then we are doing education platform too, so every week, we push out new content in webinars where it allows Singaporeans to sign up, to attend webinars host by gemologist, so sometimes I host it, sometimes it’s a replay. So we talk about different topics, like how to identify diamonds, labgrown diamonds, and how do you customise bespoke wedding bands, so these are what’s already available, so moving forward, digitalisation, it has to be something that is mind-blowing. What is mind-blowing to me at this moment, will be things like, AI. So, AI Grading. All along diamond grading has been done by gemologist, 5 gemologists decide on one diamond. If three thinks it’s a D colour, two thinks it’s a E colour, the report would be printed as D. Moving forward, digitalisation we should look at AI, AI where you collect a good sample database and your grading is based on data, based on algorithm. Now beyond that, AI could also go into customer service, right, so that is one part. Now the other part, that is interesting is NFT, we know everyone heard of NFT, and how NFT is on art, and you know every masterpiece of jewellery, let’s say engagement ring, that I customised for you, is unique to you. Because at eClarity, every piece is handmade and created for the couple. Now these items can be taken photo, and then be available as an NFT.

Sass: Given the discussion about digitalisation, in your opinion, would brick-and-mortar store still be essential in the future?

Amanda: I think how online and offline, we are going in between. How we buy online, and then we buy offline, it is true that people today, especially post-covid, we are so much more comfortable online. Brick-and-mortar store are getting less and less important. Before covid, it was not easy to convince someone, in the UK, to buy something from eClarity or BA, for example. But during covid, we become so comfortable, you know everyone is ordering food, everyone is ordering grocery, and everyone is ordering computer, and all that online. We also see that the trend is that people are more comfortable to attend webinar and buy diamonds online. That’s exactly what happened between 2020 and 2021 and continue on to 2022. Now with the market open, people are coming back to the store, people are scheduling an appointment now, say “Can I look at the diamonds?” Now the thing is there’s always two groups of people, sometimes these two groups of people they are very fluid, they migrate between online and offline. As a business owner, is important to find that sweet spot, that is right for your business model, that is right for your client base. Do you want to do 70% online, 30% offline, brick-and-mortar, or the other way round? Are you the one that does 50-50? So, I think that brick-and-mortar will never be totally gone, because people still liked the personalisation, but it could go down to 90-10. That’s my thought, and eClarity and BA.sg and together with The Sample Line. Because for The Sample Line you can just order from app, and the item will be delivered to your doorstep. And every month you get to have a new pair of earrings. So, that’s also fully online, you don’t have to come down to choose the earrings that is for rental.

Sass: So, Amanda, what is your vision for the company in the next 5 years? How do you plan to stay ahead of the competition, should there be any in the future?

Amanda: Continue to revolutionise. So, I’ve been in the business for 17 years, I am always telling myself that we need to do ground-breaking ideas every few years. It’s almost like a stop kind of thing, every 5 to 7 years, something new will come out. This is unavoidable. So, you need to be a trendsetter, trendwatcher, trend leader, continue to revolutionise, sometimes it could be the product that is different, sometimes it could be a marketing platform, sometimes it could be a purchasing platform, but the world keep changing. To stay ahead of competition, we have to continue to change. We will need to tweak, don’t over tweak. Be very determined, but don’t be over persistent if one idea doesn’t work, fine tune it. Always exercise an idea at the right time. I give the example, I’ ve been watching labgrown diamonds for 17 years, but the right time, was year 2019, when you launched the right product, market it in the right platform, at the right time, that’s when you can stay ahead, and that is continuously the vision of eClarity. The vision of eClarity, BA.sg has never changed, it was always to empower love, empower happiness, and through science, we educate and inform science, through art, and through love.

MoneyFM 89.3 The Breakfast Hurdle Live Interview – An Interview with eClarity Director, Amanda Koo

Elliott: MoneyFM89.3 It’s The Breakfast Hurdle with Elliot Danker & Ryan Huang. Let’s take a break talking about the money problem of the world and talk about jewellery. You’re going to love this one! RENTAL SUBSCRIPTION, I don’t know what your experiences with regard to this are, but did you know this pre-COVID-19, a lot of people were renting clothes to go to work. Different set of dresses everyday and I even question, “Why not more for the men?”. It was a business that was booming, a lot of people paying monthly subscription and fees so the clothes could be delivered to them for a month, and then we have COVID-19. And such services obviously started to spiral down. Now, people are going back to work. So, you would expect that it would get some traction again. And maybe thinking of such services to apply to clothes, shoes, maybe even bags. But what if I told you could rent jewellery as well. Hmm. Fine jewellery I bet. So, our next guest, eClarity is doing just that. The company’s subsidiary brand, The Sample Line, is Singapore’s First Jewellery Rental Subscription Service, offering close to thousands of jewellery designs for rent! We’re going to find out more about this rental subscription business model and the journey that our next guest made with regards to eClarity, Amanda Koo founded eClarity is on the line! Amanda good morning, how are you?

Amanda: Good morning, Elliott! Wow! Thank you for sharing, and we have something for the guys too!

Elliott: Wow you got my attention! Let’s talk a little bit about eClarity first. I understand that it was founded back in 2005, one of the region’s most promising online and instore diamond jeweller. Tell us a little bit about the business and how it evolved.

Amanda: So, I started after working for corporate, for 4 years. I was a St Nicks girls, went to ACJC, graduated from NUS Computer Science, and I worked for 4 years. Then I started the first online diamond database for eClarity in 2005. We integrated, eClarity became the first diamond database that is live, and people get to buy more than 20,000 diamonds online. So, 17 years later, we just have so many designs, we have the masterpiece, and we have decided to, you know with the sharing economy booming, we decided to reduce the excess capacity, and empowering beauty and fashion and therefore The Sample Line, for all Singaporeans.

Elliott: You mentioned St Nicks I know already. The ladies there all have good taste. Hahaha.

Amanda: I totally agree with you haha.

Elliott: Ok, so you won the award for Young Entrepreneur Award back in 2013 for simplifying the wedding band customisation process, making it accessible to Singaporeans. You know, I am a person of jewel myself. In the jewellery business, it is very difficult. I mean, do you come from a family of jewellers by any chance?

Amanda: Well, this is a very interesting question, and I try to answer that very cautiously. So, I grow up in a goldsmith shop. So, I took nap beside jewellery counters, when I was too noisy, I was made to count the gemstone box over and over again. And I would just like to share that I did not inherit the business I did not carry on there. But I was so familiar with the setting, it gives me the confidence, and the familiarity. And of course, you know, I went to sharing sessions of family dinners, so that was the formative years for eClarity.

Elliott: Did you decide there and there that, “Ok I’m going to pursue a career, maybe go study about gems, gemology”, or did you go to the corporate route and then come back?

Amanda: Yeah, not at all, I did not plan out that way. This is a story for another day, but I went through kidnap, went through robbery when I was young. You know, you kind of want to prevent yourself from the industry that your family has been going through challenges and all that. So yeah, with my Computer Science degree, the natural way is to go to coding, project management, which I did. Faithfully, wholeheartedly for 4 years. But you know I think it’s part of the DNA that I was always doing some form of businesses on the side, imported things from Japan, imported honey from Australia, and eventually I went back to diamonds and eClarity, which is a very familiar route to me.

Elliott: So, you started a business called Wah Chan? This Wah Chan Consolidated, is a tribute to your grandparents, right?

Amanda: Yeah! That it was a very heart-warming, sweet, a little naïve as well because my grandfather’s name is Wah, and my grandmother’s name is Chan. They put their name together and started a goldsmith shop. It was actually just half a shop; they rented the other half to someone else to collect rent. And my father carried that name and started goldsmith business, and I thought to carry on the heritage just so that I could feel family members are supporting me. I grew up alone since I was 13. I was born in Malaysia and when I was 13, I was sent to Singapore alone. It just gave me lots of support and love just using the same name.

Elliott: I get the sense that challenges are nothing new to you. And I was also told that you raised new-borns while also establishing your business and you would meet buyers in a fast-food outlet, you carried your sons along, what was that like for you?

Amanda: I loved sharing the story, if there’s any mothers or fathers listening, I love to share that. When I first started eClarity, I was trying to cut down on my start-up capital, not something I agree with now, but that’s what I did. Instead of renting a shop, I sold online. You know how Singaporean when you sell online, they say, “Can I see it first?” You know, we’re talking about year 2005. So, I said “Ok I can meet you, I don’t have a shop, but I’ll meet you in McDonald’s. So, I was sort of permanently locating myself at Shaw Centre McDonald’s. Back then there was a McDonald’s there.

Elliott: Like the steps going down, right? Good old days.

Amanda: Yeah! Ok now I know your age.

Elliott: Alright, oh no…hahaha!

Amanda: And you know, I just basically sat there and met client after client. And the question is always, “Is that real?” Because, you know, imagine meeting a jeweller, at that step it will be the question you ask. So that was how it was for eClarity.

Elliott: People always have this mindset, right, especially if you don’t have a shop, or some kind of physical presence. They start to question whether the thing is authentic or not.

Amanda: Because you kind of need to go back, but now we have a good establishment at eClarity, we own that kind of confidence to give to people, they can come back for resizing, collect, or upgrading, so it’s a good continuation of business and customer service. I wasn’t able to give that during that time.

Elliott: People are also more, today I find, cultured, they try to search for a bit of knowledge online and how does that factor in with this rental subscription business model? I mean, how does it work?

Amanda: So yeah, people are more comfortable buying things online already, especially during COVID times. We conducted eClarity webinars, we conducted one-on-one ring consultations, we were confirming deals over webinars and Zoom. The good thing with Zoom is we can then grow across Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Hong Kong. So that’s fantastic. Digitalisation now has a new meaning to it after COVID. Now, talking about the rental The Sample Line jewellery rental subscription, so after we launched at a good time, which is when it was still semi-inactive in terms of activity, last year around September/ October. Downtime is the best time for business development, and we did that. We created our first app, The Sample Line, we created our first Instagram account @TheSampleLine, Facebook account called The Sample Line. Now the market is ready, it’s opening, people like to, in the start we already have about 70 subscribers. When we started people were renting mostly earrings, when you Zoom with your boss, or subordinates, you will have new earrings every month.

Elliott: So, people are okay about that?

Amanda: People do. Yes. Surprising to you, surprising to us, we were happy, that people want to look good. People still want to, you know, dress up a little bit.

Elliott: So, what do people want now? So, it’s one thing to complain about going back to work right. I have noticed personally, when I go out on the streets, ladies are dressing up with even more effort, it’s 10 folds back again, guys are also starting to put a bit of an effort, they realised that. So, what are they renting?

Amanda: So, I think for everyone it’s “paying back time”, where they are bored two years. For two years, maybe we have been shopping online, watching shows and all that. So yes, the demand is a lot higher right now. The best thing people are renting, and the most popular items are exotic items that you will never buy. Example like typical thing that you would buy for your yourself or for your wife, I don’t know for you, maybe a 2-carat diamond right. Let’s say things like black diamond, like pink diamond, you probably wouldn’t buy it for your first piece. This are a bit of a matured item you probably wouldn’t buy it in your lifetime, but you can now rent it with The Sample Line.

Elliott: Not everyone is comfortable with like a pink diamond or a ruby, or an emerald, so it’s an opportunity to test whether if it looks good on your skin.

Amanda: Exactly, exactly. If you like it you can still buy it, but before that you can always test it out. You see that the younger generation they are not without the intention to buy it, they just want a new piece every month, to match with their shirt, for parties, for gatherings.

Elliott: What does it cost me though? To sign up for such services, such subscription.

Amanda: We The Sample Line are pricey because we are jewellery. You can rent up to $10,000 per month, so we are setting the price at $199. But for launch, we are just setting it at $99.

Elliott: The insurance aspect of this must be quite interesting for you.

Amanda: Yes. So, The Sample Line do have that right now. Customers could top up $35 to have it insured.

Elliott: Oh, wow that’s excellent! I want to talk a bit about the realtime diamond database that you created in 2005, could you tell me more about it?

Amanda: Yeap! So, you know how eClarity is being a startup that time, in year 2005. I couldn’t buy all the jewellery by myself. With my own capital. So, I work with 3 other companies, one from Hong Kong, one from Israel, one from New York. We consolidated our diamond data, if anyone sold any piece, they will update on the system, and show, as an end user, the diamonds that you saw, you can be sure that it is available. We have started this with eClarity since 2005 and it is still live right now.

Elliott: I see. This is a lot better than Carousell. What are your future plans? This sounds very interesting; this are going to take off a lot potentially and with the particular younger demographics. Where do you see it going?

Amanda: I believe in getting one target after another. So I am really focusing on The Sample Line right now, because I am a mother, and I see how my sons, very eco-friendly, when we are sharing an ice-cream they say “Mum, don’t take another plastic spoon, we want to save the world”. The thing about saving the world is a big thing, so we really want to reduce capacity by empowering fashion and beauty, so The Sample Line is really well received. Now on the other hand, things like labgrown diamonds, which is under the brand BA.sg, we have more than 5,000 pieces of certified labgrown diamonds, and a full livetime diamond database as well, for Singaporeans to choose and buy online.

Elliott: And labgrown diamond I believe is quite an interesting fact definitely worth watching out for. Amanda, final question, so I’m a guy, I want to come to you to rent jewellery, what is available for me?

Amanda: I have more than 500 rings for you, just rings alone eClarity has more than 500 designs, we also have cufflinks, that are diamond studded, in 18k gold, so we have too may things for you, even chains, pendants. In fact, The Sample Line’s youngest subscriber, is a 17 years old guy, he’s a TikTok gamer.

Elliott: Ah! My goodness! We are with Amanda Koo, founder of eClarity, BA.sg and The Sample Line. Really appreciate your time this morning, if you can stay safe, ya?

Amanda: Thank you! You too, Elliott.

The pave diamonds on this ring add an extra touch of glamour and sparkle. Pave setting involves placing multiple small diamonds closely together on the band, creating a “paved” appearance. This creates a stunning effect when the light hits the diamonds, making the ring shimmer and shine from every angle.

The 18k white gold band is the perfect choice to complement the diamonds. The white gold provides a clean and modern look, while also enhancing the sparkle of the diamonds. It is a popular choice for engagement rings because of its durability and resistance to tarnishing.

This fancy pear-shaped diamond ring with pave diamonds in 18k white gold is a timeless and luxurious piece of jewellery that will be treasured for a lifetime. It is a beautiful choice for an engagement ring or even as a special gift for a loved one. The combination of the unique diamond cut, pave diamonds, and white gold creates a stunning and sophisticated piece that will make anyone feel like royalty.

Overall, the fancy pear-shaped diamond ring with pave diamonds in 18k white gold is a true masterpiece of jewellery design. It is a statement piece that will turn heads and capture hearts, symbolizing the depth and beauty of your love. As you slip this ring onto your loved one’s finger, you can feel confident that you have chosen a ring that is as unique and special as your love story. This ring is a symbol of your commitment and devotion, a reminder of your shared journey and the love that brought you together. It will be treasured for a lifetime, passed down as an heirloom for generations to come, and will forever hold a special place in your hearts.

eClarity Featured Radio Interview with the Founder & Director of eClarity, Amanda Koo by CNA938 Your Singapore Weekend

CNA: We’re going to meet people at work, this is something we really enjoy doing. Because we talk to people either with unusual jobs or people who switched from something which is totally unrelated to the next thing. This next lady we’re going to speak to actually went from the wholes of a bank to the intimate surroundings of a jewellery store. But the thing is she grew up with a family of jewellers, gold jewellers. So, since she was a child, she was running around the store with her uncles and things like that. Her father her grandparents, and she actually learned a different language, carats, rather than a linguistic language.

What she did end up learning at, she was like her grandparents, she wanted to create a legacy that she could call her own and she graduated with a computer science degree, she landed her first job as a corporate banker, and in 2013, the mother of three boys was awarded with Young Entrepreneur Award.

I just wonder why she didn’t walk into the jewellery store for her first job. Anyway, let’s talk with Amanda Koo. Amanda is founder of eClarity, we find out her story today!

Amanda thank you for joining us!

Amanda: Hello Good morning, ladies! Thank you very much for the very lovely description!

CNA: Thank you so much for joining us! So, we have to ask you, because you grew up in a family of jewellers, you did not walk into the jewellery store after school you went to university, you went to computer science, you became a banker, and then you change tracks and became a jeweller! I mean, why didn’t you join the family business in the first place?

Amanda: Wow, so do you have an hour?

CNA: I wish we did! Hahaha

Amanda: The story is a long story. Yes of course like what you described, I grew up in a family of jewellers, I went through stories like kidnapping, robbery, that’s stories for another day. You know, from having chauffeurs and maid at the age of thirteen, I was sent to Singapore alone. I live alone, I cook for myself, I iron for myself, the decision was to pursue a very professional degree. So, I went on to graduate from NUS with a computer science degree.

CNA: Did your parents not want you to join the company when you were in Malaysia?

Amanda: You see, so interesting, I have friends who is a doctor, he strongly recommends his daughter not to be a doctor, at least be a dentist, not a doctor. So that’s how my parents gave me that freedom to pursue whatever capacity that I could, or dreams that I had. It wasn’t like “you have to join us”. We went through a lot, we know the pros, we know the cons.

CNA: Yeah, but then you did become a jeweller, and so just think about the transition, the difficulties, the challenges, to become a jeweller, did you sort of have to remember those things you learned as a child, what training did you received?

Amanda: So, after computer science from NUS, I worked for a few years like you described, I worked for a bank, it’s actually a computer science department. And then I went on to GIA in New York, not having the dream to have the same business as my parents but I wanted to create something myself. I went to GIA, I went to a postgraduate gemology programme, where I learned grading of diamonds, identification of gemstones, and the different metals, so I became a gemologist, I am also an accredited jewellery professional, so yeah that’s how the dream began.

CNA: It does sounds like you always wanted to do things differently from the rest of your family. They ran a traditional gold jewellery store, didn’t they?

Amanda: They have about 30-50 outlets back then, they are also observant of the upcoming trends, so while the core was gold, they had some diamonds in store as well.

CNA: Did it not occurred to you that to continue your parents, grandparents’ legacy, back home?

Amanda: By now I’m already in the industry for 17 years, maybe about 10 years ago I am integrating my contribution towards the family business. I think it’s such a good thing because I am so much more confident now, experienced now, saying the capacity I can give is so much more than, let’s say joining as a fresh grad.

CNA: Perhaps the journey did add to your maturity, your understanding of the business.

Amanda: Definitely. I think not only the knowledge that from diamonds, and from facing the customers, for 17 years creating bespoke jewellery, also being observant to the trends for so many years, I think I am just a different person now, compared to when I’m in my twenties.

CNA: Amanda, you know the pioneering of this rental subscription business model for fine jewellery, which is what you’ve done very successfully. How is this type of business model been accepted here?

Amanda: Let me share a bit of the founding journey, and how it started. For 17 years I have been creating jewellery, and the masterpiece is always something that I we keep. So rather than selling that, we keep it as a Sample Line. When you come in and you create an order, for a design that we have in store, I will create a new piece for you. We have accumulated more than a thousand pieces of sample line. Now with all the new ideology of reducing excess capacity, sharing economy, saving the world, we have decided to rent it out with the subscription programme. When we started, it was last year, it was semi-lockdown, people were just zooming at home. Our first customer were just our own customers renting for special day, or after knowing the programme, they became interested. I have people like the influencers, from Instagram, from TikTok writing to us, and we thought this is a good programme for them. And subsequently we have business owners, we have agents, so it has been slowly spreading the word, and we have more than 70 subscribers right now. And it’s growing. The youngest subscriber we have is a gamer who is 17 years old.

CNA: Oh wow!

Amanda: He’s very active on TikTok and all that. So, we’ll see how it goes.

CNA: So, this is appeal very much to younger people?

Amanda: Yeah, I recognised that, for eClarity bespoke jewellery and BA.sg labgrown diamonds, our two other brands. They appeal to people who are getting married or celebrating anniversary. But for this subscription programme, The Sample Line, it is an app, and then it’s about renting itself. I noticed that the target segment is around 20-35. They are the leader in terms of this segment.

CNA: Is this the way that jewellery industry will go? You think? You know, you adopted an app, people are looking at jewellery from an app, I’m not sure I would do that. And then the rise in jewellery rental, do you think this is the way forward? Post-pandemic?

Amanda: Did you just revealed your age?

CNA: Yeah! Hahaha! You know like probably, my mum, to be in the store to see, touch it, know the man that is going to take my jewels.

Amanda: Exactly! That’s the very common comment that I got, 17 years ago when I created the first, maybe in the region, real time diamond database. They ask me “Who would buy diamonds online? When diamonds are such a big buy”

CNA: That is so interesting though, diamond database.

Amanda: Because it appeals to more than 50 % of the people, who like transparency of the comparison, the price, the specs, the cert, rather than depending on the salesperson, I would like to explain to you, these people, they Google, they want to see what they read. So, real time diamond database was a proven digitalisation. Moving on, I think the app is the way to go. Renting is aligned with young people, rather than owning asset.

CNA: Maybe sort of pivoted digitally, that. Amanda, you’re the mother of 3 boys, do you see them taking over your business sometime in the future?

Amanda: You know boys, my oldest is 17 years old, but then when they were young they wanted to be transformer, they wanted to be spiderman. Now finally they start to see some sense, they want to be Joseph Schooling, they wanted to be a lawyer. Their dream keeps changing, I think I just want to empower them, let them pursue their dream, they have the resources, the talent, the determination. I will share with them the challenges; I’ll give them as much familiarity in the industry as I could. Which they are coming to my office to work every holiday, earn the money, let’s see where it goes to.

CNA: Just final before we let you go, Amanda what legacy, would you like to leave, for your children? They are still quite young.

Amanda: In terms of legacy, besides the property and money, you know, bringing up boys, I think what I really want to give them, is, the ability and the desire to pursue their dream, so that one day they’ll be able to, become someone who can give, who can teach, who can inspire, who can love and who can take care of me. I talk about money and business a lot, and I think the knowledge is what I would like to pass onto them.

CNA: Amanda Thank you so much! All the best in your future business, and with your family as well. Thank you for your time! Amanda Koo, founder of eClarity.

How Do You Have $1.5 million in your Wardrobe with This App, The Sample Line – Channel 8. An Interview with our Director Amanda Koo, by Lee Yu Ting Part 2.

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting: 99

Amanda:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Lee Yu Ting:

Jewellery Rental Subscription Brand Featured on Channel 8. An Interview with our Director Amanda Koo, by Lee Yu Ting Part 1 on How Do You Make Jewellery Usage Eco-Friendly?

The intensity of color in fancy pink diamonds is determined by the amount of nitrogen that is present in the diamond crystal lattice. The more nitrogen that is present, the stronger the pink color will be. This is why some pink diamonds have a pale pink color while others are deep and intense.

In terms of price, fancy pink diamonds can be some of the most expensive gems in the world. The cost is determined by several factors, including the intensity of the pink color, the carat weight, and the overall quality of the diamond. Prices can range from a few thousand dollars per carat to several hundred thousand dollars per carat, and even more for exceptional specimens.

There are two options for obtaining fancy pink diamonds: natural or lab grown. Natural pink diamonds are formed deep within the earth’s mantle and are incredibly rare. They are typically found in just a few mines around the world.

On the other hand, lab-grown pink diamonds are produced in a controlled environment using advanced technology. While they are chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds, they are often priced lower due to the fact that they are easier to produce and more widely available.

Regardless of whether you choose a natural or lab-grown fancy pink diamond, it is sure to be a stunning addition to any collection. Their unique and vibrant color make them a highly desirable gemstone that is sure to stand out in any piece of jewellery.

CNA 938 Live Interview The Double X Files – An Interview of eClarity Director Amanda Koo. Save on your Pocket and Save the World at the Same Time.

Yasmin: Amanda Koo joins us, she’s the director of eClarity. It’s very interesting, Amanda’s story. She was once a corporate banker, now she’s a jeweller, she’s a mum, and she’s also making waves in the industry.

Hi Amanda! What a pleasure to have you on The Double X Files. How are you today?

Amanda: Hi Yasmin I’m doing good! How are you?

Yasmin: I’m great. Thanks. So, what’s the average day for a jeweller?

Amanda: You know, you look at many many diamonds, gemstones, and you grade them, and you look under the microscope. This is what we do every day.

Yasmin: You mean to say, you get a new influx of new gemstones, everyday coming your way that you have to assess. Or are you just working with a pool that you have in your hands?

Amanda: We have about two shipments of new gemstones, diamonds, coloured diamonds every week. Depending on whether we’re sourcing them for our store, or sourcing them for our customers, on average twice a week.

Yasmin: I see, it does take a week to look at an entire shipment so that’s quite a bit of work. Well thank you for taking some time off to talk to us. Just talking about return of tourists on our island, and also, retail shop bustling a little bit more, in Changi Airport, and such. Does that give you hope? For your business, or businesses in general.

Amanda: It’s very interesting because when the lockdown happened in year 2020, I think jewellery in general has gone online, whether we have gone into live streaming, for myself we have gone into live webinars, selling online. We are very excited in this new platform. Of course, when people are starting to come back, we can be very personal and jewellery pieces are always best seen with your eyes. So, yeah I think the return of tourists is wonderful.

Yasmin: Ok, well I’m happy for you. It’s nice to know that you really went online, didn’t quite have to suffer that much during the pandemic but surely there were challenges for you?

Amanda: Yeah of course, when it happens everyone stopped exploring digitalisation where everyone was talking about it. You have to start working on it. So we were very busy exploring different ways to go online. Because the default way to go online was live streaming. I think jewellers were all going online in terms of live streaming. The one I did, is something I know the best, which is giving seminars pre-pandemic. So during lockdown, we went onto giving webinars, so with different topics, on diamonds, on gemstones, on bespoke/ customisation, and also comparing between labgrown and natural diamonds. That being our most popular topic actually.

Yasmin: Is this because of the move towards sustainability? Among your clients, or people who wants sparkly things on their hands, around their necks, the earlobes, want to know that everything they wear is sustainable and properly sourced.

Amanda: I think it comes from a few angles. And I would like to share with you a story. So a few years ago when I brought my kids to have McDonalds and then we ordered McFlurry, thinking that we should share because we should cut down on calories. And then I wanted to get an extra spoon and I was not allowed by my sons, to get the extra spoon because they want to save the world. That inspired me that the younger generations is just so ready love the world and protect the world. And we, our generation, meaning Yasmin and myself, we have a lot to learn, a lot to catchup. I think understanding how the younger generation see the world, becomes something I authentically cared about, like really cared about the world. That’s one thing.

Second thing, it’s also the product innovation is ready. It is commercially interesting to bring in labgrown diamonds because the price was right, the quality was good. With all these together, labgrown diamond is a meaningful business model, that is empowering the world, empowering customer needs at that time.

Yasmin: Interesting that your son taught you a lesson, huh? So explain this whole thing about sustainable jewellery to me. Where do we begin?

Amanda: So I think I am seeing it from a few perspectives. One perspective is labgrown diamonds so I explain to customers that natural diamonds grown under the world, 90-120 km beneath with high pressure high temperature, diamonds are grown. And labgrown diamond is basically mimicking this environment, but in a lab, diamonds are grown. Physically and chemically, sharing the same properties. So, if we understand that, accepting labgrown diamonds become possible with a noble cause. So that is a good foundation to start.

Second is that, to reduce the excess capacity, reduce wastage. You know how Yasmin, like if you own a 1 carat, then you buy a 2 carat, you stop wearing the 1 carat. So, I am also starting a new community, is named under The Sample Line. Where customers could come in and subscribe to the service, renting their jewellery that they are not wearing anymore, and they get to wear a new piece of jewellery every month. So, instead of buying, your tenth pair of earrings, that you may wear or you don’t wear, now you have the option of renting, returning, renting it up within the community.

Yasmin: That’s a very novel idea. Are you one of the pioneers of that here in Singapore?

Amanda: Based on our research we could be one of the first in Singapore to have a subscription model. I think in the past, when you think about jewellery rental, it’s always for your wedding day, or that very special day. And you rent that 1 piece of jewellery. So, you still continue to buy, on a yearly basis, on a monthly basis. In terms of subscription model, we want to really encourage that, sometimes renting could be better than buying and then you actually get a new pair of earrings every month. Why we say earrings is because this is like Zoom kind of era where earrings can be seen more than, let’s say bracelet. But every item is popular right now.

Yasmin: Yeah because we’re actually meeting face-to-face. Soon you’ll be renting out anklets. And maybe even toe rings. Hahaha, you never know.

But do you have to select people, who are qualified for your rental service carefully? Because jewellery is something you entrust to someone else, normally. You pass it on to your loved ones, your niece, your daughter, your child. And here you are putting it around to strangers, clearly, you must gain the trust of people who own these precious pieces in the first place.

Amanda: Yes, so in the beginning, subscribing to The Sample Line was something that only by invitation. So we only invite people to join the platform. Now as we progress, we have more measures in place. For example, we need a copy of their IC, we also have the option of having insurance before you start to subscribe. So yeah there are more measures in place to make sure that the people who are subscribing and also the people that are renting out are in a very safe space.

Yasmin: Yeah okay that sounds good. I think I understand now when you said, earrings and necklaces because that’s one size fits all versus a ring, that’s harder to fit isn’t it?

Amanda: That’s right Yasmin. But you have ten fingers. (Laughters) So it’s interesting, like I am a size 9 on my fourth finger, but probably a size 11 on my middle finger, and a size 10 on my second finger. So you know, we could try around with our different fingers. And eClarity has this little ring snuggy. If it’s too loose, we have something to tighten it. So we have little creative solutions to holding a ring better on different fingers.

Yasmin: What are the trends in jewellery that came about because of the pandemic? It’s interesting you say people want to adorn the upper part of their body, all because of Zoom. Anything else? Would they prefer cleaner design, they felt more confident to buy on the Internet versus they buy a little more embellished?

Amanda: Actually to your surprise Yasmin, actually Singaporeans are very boring, pre-pandemic. You know, solitaire, the bigger the better, for example your friend bought a 1.2 carat, and you got a 1.5. It just gets bigger and bigger and colourless and it’s round. I think inspired by our experience shopping online, we are all expert in shopping online now, and then we are all exposed to fashion, and pictures, and Instagrams and TikTok and all. I find that Singaporeans are getting more and more interesting, you know. They are starting to look at pink diamonds, blue diamonds, black gold, champagne gold, fancy shapes, eg: Marquise shape, Emerald shape, and it’s actually getting more and more exciting. In terms of ring design, they also like something that is not symmetrical, it’s no longer a classic design with a row of diamonds on the side, but you can have it non-symmetrical, very artistic people.

Yasmin: Nice to know! Sounds like social media’s helped us a lot on our education. Okay. Amanda, do stay on the line, we are continuing the chat with you.

Yasmin: So did you hear from Amanda Koo, director of eClarity that, are Singaporeans getting less boring when it comes to our jewellery choices? I know we love our solitaires, but apparently asymmetrical jewellery is also the order of the day. Nice to know! Amanda I learnt so much from you. You also offer in-depth consultation for clients, not just giving educational talks, so what’s the most common mistake people make when they want to approach this whole jewellery buying experience?

Amanda: Very interesting question Yasmin. You know, people, I think when they over-read, people like to come in-store and pretend that they know how to use the microscope.

Yasmin: HAHAHA and you can tell when they’re pretending.

Amanda: Yeah I think 99.9% of people are pretending, saying “Can I have a look?” “Can I use the microscope?” And then you ask, “What are you trying to see?” Because you know I was a graduate from NUS, and I went for a post-graduate in Gemology. I learnt for years before I truly know how to hold a microscope properly, correctly. I see with a smile in my heart, that the young people coming in asking for microscope, I say sure!

Yasmin: They’re trying to look-out for flaws.

Amanda: Yeah they are they are. You know there are dusts on the diamond. The very crucial learning point is how do you differentiate a piece of dust, on the surface of the diamond versus an inclusion inside the diamond.

Yasmin: Somebody not trained would obviously not know that. So, do you let them be that 10 minutes of imposter?

Amanda: HAHA! I usually let them have about 2 minutes, maybe. And then, I will start my education. So you know how there are 4Cs in diamond. Colour, Clarity, Carat, do you remember? And then there is one more…

Yasmin:  Oh no! No, give it to me, I’m gonna take forever to dretch that up.

Amanda: So, cut.

Yasmin: Cut! Okay.

Amanda: So there are 4Cs. We share how you prioritise the 4Cs. So I will always present two diamonds.

Unfortunately now I cant present two diamonds over the radio if not I will. I will ask, which C could you see it first? Carat first? Or can you see the inclusions first? Which is clarity.

Yasmin: Hmmm

Amanda: So, learning how to prioritise the 4Cs get you better value.

Yasmin: Generally, the average buyer would perhaps prioritise clarity last?

Amanda: That’s right Yasmin! Yeah I like that.

Yasmin: Yeah because you probably start with, I don’t know, the size of it first?

Amanda: Well done!

Yasmin: And then you go for the shape?

Amanda: Yeah, so shape is not known in 4Cs. But shape is important.

Yasmin: Wouldn’t that be the cut though?

Amanda: Yeah or the colour. I will still describe colour as water versus honey drink. You don’t need a microscope to differentiate water and honey drink, right?

Yasmin: Yeah. Is it easier to sell diamonds or jewellery to people who have bad eyesight?

Amanda: I have guys who come in and say Amanda I’m colour blind, so I can’t tell the difference. And I say too bad, your girlfriend is not colourblind right?

Yasmin: That’s a good one. You have an answer for everything, Amanda.

I want to talk about your journey a little bit. You were a computer science major. And then you became a corporate banker. And then you went to the US to study gemology and you really wanted to start this business because you grew up in the jewellery business too, a fascinating background. You do realise a lot of women who studied STEM subjects apparently do not go on to pursue STEM jobs, and you fall in that category. How do you explain yourself?

Amanda: Ok, so I think studying computer science is so important to me. Because my mind was totally artistic before the computer science study. I was so much into literature, acting, singing and you know when you’re in computer science only results matter. So don’t express yourself and no need to explain yourself.

Yasmin: You just need the data and the answers.

Amanda: Yeah like, is the programme working? So that really opens up a problem-solving skill in my mind. And I think when I thought of a way, to incorporate or integrate my study versus my interest. So my study was Computer Science, and my interest was diamond and fashion and beauty, and then I integrated it with our online, live time online diamond database. So the moment I thought about it, it’s time that we could give back to the world, where you revolutionise the jewellery industry, by having this integration.

Yasmin: And most of us could log-on to the diamond database? To see the availability of the diamonds in actual time?

Amanda: Yes definitely.

Yasmin: What a way to give back! Yeah so that’s your pairing of your art and your computer science background. Lovely! Amanda thank you for talking to us today and you’re such a joy! I learned a lot from you.

Amanda: Thank you Yasmin.

Yasmin: Amanda Koo is director of eClarity, my guest on The Double X Files.
